Trauma & Childhood Healing

The wounds we carry from our earliest years can shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through the world — often in ways we don’t fully recognise. Whether you experienced neglect, instability, loss, or something harder to name, your experiences are valid and your pain deserves to be heard.

At Jade Counselling, we offer a compassionate, trauma-informed space where you can begin to explore and process what happened to you — at your own pace, without pressure or judgement. Together, we work gently to understand the roots of your patterns, release what no longer serves you, and reconnect with a sense of safety within yourself.

Healing from childhood trauma is not about forgetting. It is about reclaiming your life and writing a new chapter on your own terms.

Question and Answer

I'm not sure what happened to me counts as trauma. Can I still come to counselling?

Absolutely. Trauma is not defined by the severity of an event but by the impact it has had on you. If something from your past is still affecting how you feel, think, or behave today, it is worth exploring — regardless of whether it fits a particular label. There is no threshold you need to meet to deserve support.

Will I have to talk about every detail of what happened to me?

No. You are always in control of what you share and when. Trauma counselling does not require you to recount every memory in detail. We work at your pace, and many approaches to healing focus on how your past is showing up in the present rather than on revisiting painful events directly.

Is it normal to feel worse before I start to feel better?

For some people, yes. Beginning to explore difficult experiences can stir up emotions that have been buried for a long time. This does not mean something is wrong — it often means the healing process has begun. Your counsellor will support you through this and help you develop tools to manage any difficult feelings that arise between sessions.

My childhood was difficult but I've never spoken about it to anyone. How do I even begin?

You begin exactly as you are — unsure, perhaps nervous, and ready enough to try. You don't need to have the words prepared or know where to start. Your counsellor will guide the conversation gently, and the first session is simply about getting to know each other and exploring what feels important to you.
