Abuse Recovery

Recovering from abuse — whether physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological — is one of the most courageous journeys a person can undertake. Abuse can leave you feeling isolated, ashamed, or questioning your own reality. You may have been told your experience wasn’t real, wasn’t serious, or wasn’t enough. We believe you, and we are here.

Our approach to abuse recovery focuses on restoring your sense of self-worth, helping you understand the dynamics of what you experienced, and supporting you as you rebuild trust — in yourself and in others. Sessions are led entirely by your needs, and we move only as fast as feels safe for you.

You survived. Now let us walk alongside you as you begin to truly live again.

Question and Answer

I'm still not sure what happened to me was abuse. Does that matter?

Not at all. Many people who have experienced abuse spend years questioning whether their experience was "bad enough" to be taken seriously — often because the person who hurt them made them doubt themselves. You do not need to arrive with a clear definition of what happened. You only need to know that something didn't feel right, and that it has affected you.

I feel a lot of shame about what happened. Will I be judged?

Never. Shame is one of the most painful legacies of abuse, and it is something many survivors carry — entirely without reason. The counselling space at Jade is one of complete confidentiality and unconditional acceptance. Whatever you share, you will be met with compassion, not judgement.

The abuse happened a long time ago. Is it too late to get help?

It is never too late. The effects of abuse do not have an expiry date, and neither does the potential for healing. Many people seek support years or even decades after the event, and find that counselling is just as valuable — often profoundly so — at any stage of life.

What if I still have feelings for the person who abused me?

This is far more common than people realise, and it does not make you weak or foolish. Abuse often occurs within relationships where there is also care, dependency, or love — and those feelings do not simply disappear. Counselling offers a space to hold the complexity of those emotions without pressure to feel a particular way.
